What is VO2 Max?
The single best marker of cardiovascular fitness — and longevity.
VO2 max is the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use during all-out effort. It’s the most validated marker of cardiovascular fitness in sports science and a powerful predictor of long-term health.
At Catalyst Performance we measure it directly using clinical-grade metabolic analysis. You wear a lightweight mask while we ramp the workload on a treadmill or bike. Every breath — oxygen in, carbon dioxide out — is analyzed to map exactly how your aerobic and anaerobic systems work.

Your Report Includes
What You’ll Walk Away With
VO2 Max Score
Your true aerobic ceiling, percentile-ranked against age and gender norms.
Heart Rate Training Zones
Personalized Zone 2, threshold, and VO2 zones — calibrated to your physiology, not a generic formula.
Fat & Carb Crossover
The exact intensity where you switch from fat to carb dominance — critical for endurance fueling and body composition.
Lactate Threshold (VT1 / VT2)
Ventilatory thresholds that mark where workouts shift from sustainable to glycolytic.
Resting Metabolic Rate
Optional add-on: how many calories you burn at rest, measured directly instead of estimated.
Coach Debrief
A 1:1 review of your numbers and a clear plan for what to do with them — not just a PDF dump.
Built For
Who Books a VO2 Test?
Endurance athletes
Runners, cyclists, triathletes, and Hyrox competitors who want pace and power zones built on measured thresholds — not a “220 minus age” guess.
High performers chasing longevity
VO2 max is one of the strongest predictors of all-cause mortality. If you’re training for the next 40 years, you need a baseline.
Body composition & fueling
Pair VO2 with RMR to know exactly how much you burn at rest and at every training intensity — the foundation for fat loss and performance fueling.
The Process
How the Test Works
Screening & setup (~10 min)
Health and training history, modality choice (treadmill or bike), heart rate strap, and mask fit.
Warm-up + ramp test (~25 min)
Easy warm-up, then we progressively increase pace or wattage every minute until you reach max effort. Heart rate, ventilation, VO2, and VCO2 are sampled breath-by-breath.
Recovery & debrief (~25 min)
Cool down while we generate your report, then a 1:1 walkthrough of your zones, thresholds, and training prescription with your coach.

Why Catalyst
A performance facility, not a clinic.
Your VO2 numbers come back paired with a coach who can actually do something with them — whether that’s redesigning your run zones, fixing your fueling, or rebuilding a return-to-play plan after injury.
Testing is run on calibrated VO2 Master metabolic analyzers — the same hardware used by university sport-science labs and professional teams. Tests are administered by certified strength & conditioning specialists and physical therapists at our Point Loma facility.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a VO2 max test take?
Plan on about an hour from check-in to walking out with your report. The actual ramp test is 12–18 minutes, with screening, recovery, and a 1:1 debrief on either side.
Treadmill or bike — which should I pick?
Pick the modality you train in. Runners run, cyclists ride. If you do both, choose the discipline you most want zone data for — your VO2 max number will be slightly higher on a treadmill, but threshold zones don’t transfer cleanly between modalities.
Do I need to be in great shape to take this test?
No. The protocol scales to your current fitness — we ramp from your easy pace until you reach your personal max. Beginners get just as much value as elite athletes; the test simply tells you where you are today.
How should I prepare?
Avoid hard training and alcohol the day before, eat a normal meal 2–3 hours before the test, hydrate well, and bring training shoes plus the gear you’d normally wear for a hard workout. Skip caffeine if you’re testing for resting metabolic rate.
How often should I retest?
Every 8–16 weeks if you’re actively training a specific block. Once a year is a useful longevity baseline if you’re not chasing a competition.
What does it cost?
Pricing and current availability are on our booking page. Member discounts and bundled VO2 + RMR packages are available.
